This morning, we shared a message from our wider UU community via video, despite some technical challenges.

Continuing our monthly theme of Love, I would like to share more words from our wider UU community:

Power Prayer

Spirit of Life, I have witnessed
a loud love,
an out-loud love,
that challenges me.

I did not recognize it
at first--
the rumble of an ocean
I had long been under.

But here it is right now
and it looks just
like the whole world
could be.

It doesn’t play nice;
why should it

played it a lullaby?

This love demands.

A love so loud
it lays rocks at the feet of children
who can’t find their path home--
across the pipeline--

This love is indifferent to tolerance.
It invites you into your own
heart, where God loveself

Drink and know
that like that other love
this love

This out-loud love
makes no secret of its aim

But first, set fires.
Throw the poison

Spirit of Life,

Sunday, February 12th:

This morning, we continued exploring our February theme of Love with a message from our wider UU Community via video.  Rev. Aaron White of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas talked about love as one of the pillars of our UU faith, especially rooted in the Universalist tradition that included figures like Hosea Ballou and George de Benneville.  To them, as to many of us today, it didn't make sense that the love of the divine would be limited by things like race or creed, such that only the right kind of people would be saved.  For our Universalist forebears, no one and nothing was ever outside of God's love, in eternity or in this world.  Rev. White called on us, though, to go beyond an intellectual commitment to this and asked: what do we do about it?  For most UUs, agreeing that there is no eternal hell is easy; more difficult and vital is asking, what on earth feels like hell, and are we ready to smash it?  Because for us, Rev. White argued, the point of religion is not to become the right kind of person and earn divine love, it is to set aside judgments of worthiness and do divine love.

Community Events this week:

This Wednesday, February 15th at 1 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "The Practice of Loving-Kindness."  Relationships, family issues, a sense of isolation, loneliness, work stress, politics, financial strains, loss—all take a toll on our physical and mental health. This session is an introduction to the Loving-Kindness practice, grounded in the foundational concepts of mindfulness. Participants will be invited to experience a guided Loving-Kindness meditation during the program. Engaging in an active Loving-Kindness practice brings greater calm and happiness in daily life, relaxing the defense mechanisms associated with fear and negative mental states.  Terry Wilson will lead the session. This Thursday, February 16th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Kirigami Crafts: From Folding and Cutting Paper to Smart Materials and Soft Fabrics."  Origami—the Japanese art of folding paper—and its cutting variation Kirigami, are among the most popular crafts we learn as kids. The joy of creating interesting shapes from a flat sheet is something we carry well into adulthood. Get ready to make Kirigami paper crafts with Dr. Vianney Gimenez-Pinto, assistant professor of physics and chemistry. And this Saturday, February 18th at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts an Artist Reception for Julie Smith.  Smith, longtime photographer for the Jefferson City News-Tribune, has spent a career documenting events and activities, both large and small, in Jefferson City and Cole County. She is known throughout the region for her interest and attendance in what’s happening in River City. Sunday, February 5th, 2023:

Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our February theme: Love.  Rev. Mike talked about the struggle to define love, spurred by Bette Midler's song, "The Rose", and guided largely by the work of therapist and writer M. Scott Peck. Peck believes that love is an act of will, a reciprocal seeking of spiritual improvement, that love is as love does. Mike was largely sympathetic to this view, but also understands the desire to see love as a form of positive feeling and affection towards one's fellow humans (and possibly other beings). (Summary by Rich Burdge.)

This Tuesday, February 7th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery,  Missouri River Regional Library presents an Author Talk with Deborah Reinhardt: "St. Louis Coffee: A Stimulating History." Gateway City was a popular stop for miners, trappers and settlers heading west, so offices and wholesaler warehouses lined the riverfront. Railroads and steamboat brought an abundance of goods, including green coffee. By the early 20th century, St. Louis—with more than 70 roasting companies—was the coffee capital of the United States. Some coffee businesses faded while Ronnoco remains, working alongside newer generation roasters such as Kaldi’s and dozens more. In her new book, Deborah Reinhardt traces an industry that helped shape St. Louis history and shows how today’s creative coffee professionals continue to influence a culinary culture. A St. Louis native, Reinhardt is an award-winning travel and food writer, as well as a member of the St. Louis Culinary Society. Sunday, January 29th:

This morning, we shared a recent message from our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia.  Two weeks ago, intern Minister George Grimm-Howell honored Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday with a sermon sermon titled "The Road to Jericho," in which he explored themes from Dr. King’s sermon “On Being a Good Neighbor.” Stories from Toni Morrison, the parable of the Good Samaritan, and George’s chaplaincy experiences among the urban poor of St. Louis helped point the way to our personal transformation on our personal roads to Jericho.  (Summary adapted from the UUCC Youtube page with additional notes from Rich Burdge.)

Reflections on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy form a timely bridge from our January theme of Finding Our Center to our upcoming February theme of Love.  Many of us, and UUism as a movement, work to center ourselves on the kind of justice Dr. King worked for: justice that reaches out in love, lifting up the full diversity among us and forming beloved community.

"Love is a Rose," Rev. Mike Adamek

Is there only good Love or is there both good Love and bad Love? My take is simple.  Love is a positive virtue, a positive form of human excellence and yes there are myriad ways we fool ourselves when we act badly and blame it on love. Love does not inoculate us against great pain however, but it can help us weather it. If Love is a rose, where you touch it, always on the stem and never on the petals, naturally comes surrounded with thorns.

This Friday, February 3rd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents their First Friday Film.  This month's selection: "Brooklyn."  Ellis Lacey, a  young Irish immigrant, navigates her way through 1950s Brooklyn in this award-winning film. This morning, local Rotarian Stephen J. Stark joined us to talk about the work of Rotary and how Peace is at the center of their mission.

But for this week's email, I would like to address our monthly theme of Finding Our Center with a quotation from the Tao Te Ching:

Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub;
It is the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel;
It is the space within that makes it useful.

When we set out to find our center, often we look for some solid core of purpose that our lives can revolve around, but such a thing may not be evident.  The Taoist master's words suggest that if this happens, it is not a reason to despair --- an empty center can be beautiful and powerful.

Sunday, January 8th:

This morning, we celebrated our annual Fire Communion, a ritual in which we write words of intention on pieces of flash paper and then the papers are burned with sudden and brilliant flashes of light.  Often this ritual is used to release the things we intend to let go of, but today, we shared words from Rev. Fiona Heath of the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, Ontario, who invites us to let the flame illuminate our dreams.  In these winter months, the earth speaks of darkness and rest, and dark and rest are the time for dreaming.  These dreams will shape us and in turn shape our world, not because we rush to add them to our to-do lists, but because we take the time to wonder at their flashes of brilliance and let them touch our hearts.

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflections on Finding Our Center.  Rev. Mike shared this Swedish proverb:

"Fear Less, Hope More
Eat Less, Chew More
Whine Less, Breathe More
Talk Less, Say More
Hate Less, Love More
And all good things will be ours"

It strikes me that there are many such words of wisdom for finding our center, and if we rush to add them all to our to-do lists, we can ironically pull ourselves off-center this way and that.  But if we slow down, listen to ourselves, and listen deeply to the words rather than rushing to make them useful, we can center ourselves and hear what the creators of these proverbs wanted to share with us.

Fire Communion

On or near the first Sunday in January, many Unitarian Universalist congregations hold a ritual to bid farewell to the old year, and to release it.

In the words of Rev. Elizabeth Harding, "The fire communion separates the end of the year from the beginning, helping us to put in perspective the joys and sorrows, the changes and transitions, the ups and downs of the year. It's a half-way point in our church year, but a celebration of the outside calendar’s year’s end and year’s beginning."

​In a ceremony of the burning bowl, people are invited to write down words, or a phrase, to sum up what they wish to release before entering the new year. They then come forward and the paper will be burned for them.

This Friday, January 6th, Missouri River Regional Library presents their monthly First Friday Film at 7 pm in their Art Gallery.  This month's selection: "The Music Box."  Attorney Ann Talbot takes the only course of action open to her as a woman who has chosen the pursuit of justice as her life's work, but she does so at the cost of destroying her family. In this courtroom drama, she defends her father, a retired Hungarian immigrant living in Chicago who is accused of war crimes in Hungary during World War II. Dear UUFJC Members and Friends,

Our January newsletter has been delayed.  Please watch for it later this week!

On Christmas Day and the last Sunday of 2022, we took a day off from our regular services to let our members, friends, and volunteers have time for family and personal Christmas celebrations.  We did, however, open our doors for those who wished to gather informally.  Perhaps few if any people came, but we recognize that for those who would wish to come, our space can be important and sacred.

Hoping you all had a warm and happy Christmas, and wishing you the same for the coming New Year's Day.  Together we'll see what wonders 2023 will bring us!

Sunday, December 18th, 2022:

This morning, the children in our Religious Education class shared the wonder of the holiday season.  They alongside their families delivered a Christmas program filled with music, poetry and a warm-hearted story for the holiday.

The songs and stories and rituals of Christmas inspire a sense of warmth and wonder for many of us, but not everyone finds wonder in the same places.  If you are not feeling the "holiday spirit," there's no need to fret over it.  Wonders of all kinds surround us; better than stressing over wonder you don't feel is to find and embrace the wonder that speaks to you.

This morning, we shared a recently recorded service by five Unitarian Universalist congregations along Massachusetts' North Shore recognizing Thanksgiving.  The service is available to view online: https://youtu.be/xyhgANxYnXo

As we wrap up our month of reflection on Change, I would like to share this reading, reminding us that creating the world we want doesn't just mean changing things outside ourselves and our faith community.  Becoming the beloved UU community we dream of calls on us to be transformed by love and with love.

The Unitarian Universalism That Does Not Yet Exist

I don't think it will in that of my children, but I can't deny my love for it. You know, wanting to be there in that struggle. That's why I'm fighting.

This Tuesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest LU-MRRL Lecture: The Lincoln University Poetry Workshop Live Series.  The undergraduate poets from the English 376: Intermediate Poetry Workshop and English 476 Advanced Poetry Workshop (taught by Elijah Burrell, poet and associate professor of English) will present a public reading and engage directly with a live audience.  This reading is open to the general public, and we hope friends of the English program at Lincoln University and students from neighboring colleges and universities will attend Poetry enthusiasts across mid-Missouri are always welcome to join the program in support of student writers.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Friday, December 2nd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film: "The Good House."  Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline star in this multilayered, wickedly funny portrait of a New England realtor whose revived romance with a high school flame digs up her troubled past.
